One of the reasons that CBAN was founded five years ago was to promote the concept of community-focused broadband. We feel that consumers are best served by companies with roots in their communities and who treat customers as people and not just entries on a corporate balance sheet. ImOn Communications is one such provider, and was one of CBAN's first Provider Members. Two recent announcements by the eastern Iowa-based company show how it is committed to community service and customer experience excellence. Recently, ImOn announced that it is pledging to contribute $100,000 to non-profit organizations in and around Dubuque, Iowa - one of the markets it has expanded to from its original base in Cedar Rapids. The company has also announced it has launched free public Wi-Fi with the South of 6 business district in Iowa City as well as the Pepperwood Plaza. Hats off to ImOn for their community focus! The Nebraska Farm Bureau has inked a deal with Starlink, the satellite-based broadband internet service, to offer its members two free months of service when they subscribe to Starlink service. Starlink is expanding its footprint across rural America using its low earth orbit satellites (now more than 4,000 in orbit) to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet. SpaceX, the Elon Musk company that owns and operates the Starlink satellite constellation, says they now have more than 1.5 million subscribers. “We are excited to work with Starlink to deliver high-speed broadband to rural areas in Nebraska that are underserved,” said NEFB President Mark McHargue. “This will provide Farm Bureau members with two months of free service, a nearly $200 value when subscribing to Starlink for high-speed broadband internet service in remote and rural areas in Nebraska.” - Statement from Nebraska Farm Bureau One of Iowa's "first generation" of municipal broadband providers is CBAN's newest Provider Member. Laurens Municipal Power and Communications ("LMPC") in Laurens, Iowa established a municipal communications utility in 1998. It's first network used a combination of fiber optics and coaxial cables (HFC), but LMPC rebuild their network to fiber-to-the-premise in 2022 to meet the continued growth of internet demand. LMPC is governed by a three-member Board of Trustees, which also oversees the communities municipal water and electric utilities. Welcome of CBAN, LMPC!
A municipal fiber network is PC Magazine's annual Reader's Choice Award as the best internet service provider in America. The honor goes to NextLight, the municipal fiber network serving Longmont, Colorado. NextLight received an overall satisfaction rating of 9.9 out of 10 - which PC Magazine says is unprecedented in the history of its survey of ISP's. "Customers consider NextLight the perfect ISP. That tells you everything about why big ISPs are afraid of municipalities getting into this game and block the option in far too many places with political help." - PC Magazine Municipal broadband providers are no stranger to PC Magazine's awards. CBAN Provider Member Cedar Falls Utilities was named the nation's fastest ISP in 2020.
