ARAarawireless.org is an at-scale platform for advanced wireless research to be deployed across the Iowa State University (ISU) campus, City of Ames (where ISU resides), and surrounding research and producer farms as well as rural communities in central Iowa, spanning a rural area with diameter over 60km. It serves as a wireless living lab for smart and connected rural communities, enabling the research and development of rural-focused wireless technologies that provide affordable, high-capacity connectivity to rural communities and industries such as agriculture.

Principal investigator for the project, ISU Professor Hongwei Zhang, will be the keynote speaker during lunch on October 20th. Professor Zhang will outline the research project and discuss how the lessons learned might be used to bring better broadband to rural areas.

ARA is part of the National Science Foundation Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) program.

After missing. it's 2020 conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities is rebooting its annual Broadband Conference on October 20 and 21, 2021. This year the event will be held at Stoney Creek Hotel in Johnston, Iowa.

The conference program is still being finalized, but here are some of the confirmed topics and speakers for the two-day event.

Confirmed Workshop Sessions

WiFi 6
Two sessions presented by Gabriel Reyes with Comtrend. Gabriel did a virtual training on WiFi 6 for the Iowa Heartland Chapter of the SCTE in July that was very well received. This two-session track will start with the basics of WiFi 6 and then take a deeper dive into the latest wireless networking standard built to handle today's higher bandwidth needs.
Lessons Learned from Dropping Cable TV
Brandon Halsne with Osage Municipal Utilities will discuss OMU's experience with dropping cable TV from its product portfolio at the end of 2020. If you are still pulling your hair out over retransmission consent agreements and rising programming prices, you won't want to miss it!
Effective Stakeholder Communications
Kelli Bloomquist with Bloomquist Media will talk about some of the do's and don'ts when communicating with your utilities stakeholders and customers
Making Smart City Simple
Ed Barrett and Ken Demlow with HR Green will talk about some of the key elements of a "Smart City" and how your broadband utility can be leveraged to benefit all citizens.
Change and Communications
Brian Weis with Innovative Systems will outline how to implement change successfully and communicate it in a way that helps create a company culture that embraces empowerment. Brian will discuss the keys to successfully implement change, the important aspects of communicating to employees in a company environment, and what it takes to have empowered employees.
Communicating The Value of Public Ownership
Christopher Mitchell with the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and his new Iowa-based associate Doz Lee will cover a topic that municipal utilities often overlook: why your utility is so important to your community.

Attendee Registration

Conference registration is just $130 per person for IAMU utility, associate, and affiliate members.  Non-IAMU members are also welcome to attend for $180 per person.  Registration is online at www.iamu.org/events
